To elucidate the mechanisms of canopy interception loss in a dense cedar plantation forest, a plot was set in a 49-year-old Japanese cedar plantation in western Tokyo. Detailed observations of canopy interception losses were collected at the site. The 15 m × 15 m plot in the high-density planted forest had tree density of 2170/ha, with 18.4 m average tree height. During the measurement period, the canopy interception rate relative to total rainfall was 21%, but the interception loss reduced under high rainfall intensity and high wind speed. The results were reproduced using simple bucket simulation models with good accuracy in general. One of the models was newly proposed, in which evaporation rate was set constant and bucket size was varied depending on the wind speed and rainfall intensity. However, as the wind speed and rainfall intensity increased, the reproduction accuracy decreased, suggesting that some interception mechanism is missing from the presented model.
